Here are some resources to look into:
Not to sound alarmist though I will for the sake of this message!
Strike that! Sound the alarms. Have you been on the fence and not sure how to show up fully in the world? Well those days are long gone. That was a luxury and a privilege. Now we must fully show up, it may be messy and if not now- when?
Hillel says, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?” Ethics of the Fathers, 1:14
Are you a healer, activist, artist, writer, executive director or someone who wants to show up fully and hasn’t because you feel____________?
Our insecurities can overwhelm us causing an inertia. The overwhelm gives us a place to hide. So that we never have to confront the possibility of making a missed takes=mistakes. You know that maybe you don’t know it all. Or better yet that you’re shit is not as “together” as you would like or think it needs to be. Or that you don’t have what so and so has. We are still thinking of ourselves. People are hurting and need your gifts and skills. No more hiding, no more silence! It is costing us.
There is work to do and we can’t stay stuck anymore in our fears, stuck in our overwhelm. There is healing work to be done, liberation work to be done.
YOU ARE HERE FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!
You must understand that by you owning all that you are. And showing up with all the mess and imperfection, that allows others to see the possibilities. That we can rise, that we don’t have to be perfect or have it all figured out. That we need to be willing to learn and grow. And that is part of the journey. The journey is the point!
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of Gd. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of Gd that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
― Marianne Williamson,
There is more at stake than ourselves. No longer is the cost just about you. It never was! It is about the impact of what you bring to the healing of the collective community.
Be with me here, do you feel a compulsion…
to support youth and create space for them?
to hold healing space for folks healing from abuse?
to become active in campaigning in your community for rights or policy?
to teach littles?
to create an organization that in-powers folks and creates a platform to bring the issues forward and their solutions?
See if we get stuck on why we think we are the wrong person for the job and all the ways we fall short, we miss it. You miss the point, that you’re imperfect (human) embodiment is what is needed to bring healing to the other imperfect (humans). Every time you chose to rise, to raise your voice on an issue and stand for healing you heal. Yourself and others.
This is messy, showing up is messy as all shit! It is fraught with frailty and imperfection. You’ll discover the stuff your made up of and want to run. And then you’ll remember there is more at stake. That doing it afraid is part of the work. That seeming a fool is worth it because it impacts others. For the well-being hopefully, if you show up transparently and full of soul. And this is the thing, as a conscious leader who is showing up for the messy- it is going to be hard. Also never ending. You will show up and give it your all and then someone will come after. And do it entirely different, as it should be.
Your work can’t be egoically attached, you can’t hold on to it tightly. It must evolve and change. You must evolve, grow and change. Hold it all lightly, show up fiercely!
“You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.” Ethics of the Fathers 2:21
So what do we do? How do we do it afraid and risk engaging the complexity of bringing all you are to the table?
We do it with the clear understanding that because we see it we have the ability to respond=response-ability. You’re not obligated to finish it. But you are not free to walk away. We need you.
We need your gifts and skills, we need the big ass hug you give. We need that way you feed people and they feel satiated. Or how you listen deeply.
We need your engine building, chicken coup making and canning ass.
All hands on deck!
Do you understand what is at stake?! It is not just you. It never was. And now more than ever we’ll need you to do it afraid.
What times we are living in. There is some serious conversations going around. And alot of pain….historical, present and some for the first time are feeling it all. I have an enormous amount of compassion for our pain both individual and collective. Especially when we are talking about justice and equity.
Earlier this year on a personal level I went through a pretty bad divorce. It was painful and triggered past trauma. It knocked me on my ass. Lets just say that I’ll never be the same. It was so painful. As I sat with the process and all that it came with, I couldn’t help but to remind myself to be present. Reminding myself there is no shortcut, as bad as I wanted one. Anything to take away the pain would have been nice to say the least.
Your capacity to hold space for the pain in community is related to your capacity to hold space for your own pain. #consciousleaders
It doesn’t mean we have to experience the pain of others. It does mean that our ability to be with our own pain will teach us alot. It will give us a knowing compassion for the process of others. Because we have been through our own. We understand how messy it can be or blinding to be so hurt. I will go further to name the impact of trauma on individuals, and how it can alter how you see the world and what’s possible.
I often want to know how someone whose sphere of influence is large holds space for their own pain. How do they transparently own their own places of light and shadow. Because that tells me more about their capacity to hold their communities. We need Conscious Leaders who are trauma informed, transparent and compassionate in all places in our community.
Anything less will continue to compound the stress and pressure already present in this time. It will continue to perpetuate the constructs that keep us fragmented as a community and impede our collective healing.
So how are you holding pain? Your own? Can you be with that? If you can…. I have hope for us all. If you’ve struggled with this I invite you to work with me one on one or if you are a woman you can join the Conscious Women’s Leadership Intensive in January! Sign up now.
Wishing us all expanded capacity!
